Check-In and Check-Out
★ 3 (fi 6) (second term, 3-0-4) Modern organic reactions, reactive intermediates, and mechanisms. An essential bridge to graduate level coursework in organic chemistry, carbon materials, chemical biology, and environmental chemistry. The laboratory course provides experience in advanced level laboratory techniques, designing and executing a (short) multistep synthesis, preparing a manuscript, and presenting a seminar on your work.
Lab Locations
- The advanced level Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratories are located in the CCIS Building (L1-023 and L1-024)
Course Coordinators
- Questions or concerns regarding the laboratory components of the course should be directed to Dr. Hayley Wan ([email protected])
- Questions or concerns regarding the lecture components of the course should be directed to Dr. Jeff Stryker ([email protected])
General Information
- Students must obtain a mark of 60% in the laboratory component to pass the organic chemistry course.
- The overall value of the laboratory component is 40%.
- Students are expected to attend ALL laboratory periods.
- Laboratory classes begin promptly at 2:00 pm and finish at 6:00 pm.
- If you are ill, do not attend the lab. Instead, complete the excused absence form (located on eClass) within one week of the missed lab. Excused absences for up to TWO laboratory classes will be allowed. The weighting of these missed experiments will be transferred to the final lab exam.
Lab Reports
- Lab reports are due seven days following the lab class in which the experiment was performed (by 2:00 pm).
- Lab reports handed in after the 7-day deadline will have 5 marks deducted per day (up to 3 days).
- Lab reports will not be accepted later than 3 days after the deadline. In case of extenuating circumstances such as documented illness, please email Dr. H. Wan.
Check-In and Check-Out
- During Check-In, ensure ALL equipment is accounted for and in good condition. You are responsible for all the glassware and equipment for the entire semester.
- If items are missing, cracked or broken, notify your TA.
- Once you are satisfied that you have a complete set of equipment, you must sign the 'Glassware Sheet' before starting any experimental work.
- During Check-Out at the end of the semester, ensure ALL equipment is cleaned and returned to the drawers. Then clean your bench and sink area and complete the assigned communal cleaning duties from your TA.
